Unit 2 Influences on Our Lives: Nature versus Nurture
Reporter: He looks like your average 11-year-old. He
loves video games, has a typical relationship with his kid
sister, and takes tennis lessons.
Tennis Instructor: There we go!
Reporter: But despite his ordinary appearance, Michael
Kearney is rather extraordinary.
Michael: I started my entire education when I was three,
when I went to kindergarten. Then went to high school
at, I believe, five, graduated high school at six, entered
college at six, graduated from Santa Rosa Junior College
at eight, went to the University of South Alabama at
eight, graduated from the University of South Alabama,
June 5th, 1994 at ten.
Reporter: Hard to believe, but true. Last June, Michael
Kearney became the world’s youngest college graduate,
earning a degree in anthropology. Even as an infant, he
was ahead of his time.
Cassidy Kearney (Mother): Michael started reading at
eight months and then by the time he was three, y’know,
he was reading Treasure Island and The Count of Monte
Cristo.
Reporter: Although Michael’s parents didn’t realize at
first how gifted he was, once they did, they felt an accelerated
education was best for him. And how did he feel
about going to college when most kids are in grade
school?
