1 The generation gap is a term used to describe the wide differences between the younger and older generations. 2 This gap is a result of the young an old being unable to understand each other because of differences in tastes, opinions, experiences, habits and behaviors. 3 The term first became popular in the 1960s in western countries because of cultural differences between the younger and older generations. 4 There was a significant gap growing in areas such as culture, politics, fashion, and musical tastes. 5 The Beatles symbolized the generation gap at the time between those who liked rock and roll and those who didn’t. 6 There have always been differences in opinions between the young and old throughout history, but never as great as the era beginning in the sixties.
7 Originally, families relied on each other to exist and flourish in society and children were guided by their parents without many external influences. This cycle was perpetual until the sudden and rapid rise of technology. 8 The advancement of new inventions became a major factor to opening doors and allowing the younger generation to experience new ideas and freedoms. 9 As technology advances at a faster rate, so too does the influence it has on society and the generation gap. 10 Perhaps the greatest influence, more recently, has come from the invention of the personal computer and the internet which has widened the gap between the young and old
